フランス文学者で筑波大学の竹本忠雄名誉教授（７８）は「大震災の被害そのものはいかに甚大、悲惨であろうとも日本人の忍耐と英知によって必ず克服されるだろう。外国の援助もあるだろう。だが、精神の立ち直りはわれわれ自身によってしかできない」とし、６５年前の国難であった敗戦後の体験を話した。
